Founded by the Romans in 48AD, Gloucester is a city in the county of Gloucester, south west England. The 2001 Census recorded Gloucesterâ~@~Ys population as 109,885 [1] . The cityâ~@~Ys main industries are primarily service industries, as well as the finance and business sector, and, more traditionally, the aerospace industry. According to the 2001 Census, nearly 5 per cent of the economicaly active population was unemployed (slightly less than England as a whole) [2] .Ã|

The city of Gloucester is roughly 30 miles north of Bristol and just over 40 miles south of Birmingham.Ã| By road, Gloucester is accessible most significantly via the M5 motorway (running east of the city), whilst the A38 motorway connects the city to Bristol and Tewkesbury. Furthermore, the A40 (running west to east) and the A46 motorways link Gloucester to Cheltenham and the Forest of Dean, and to Stroud, respectively. Gloucester also connects to Cirencester and Ledbury via the A417. Offering noteworthy transport routes for the city, canals link Gloucester to the Severn Estuary, Hereford and Ledbury. Certain river craft also use the River Severn to connect the city to the River Avon. Gloucester railway station offers rail connections to various locations in the country.

Figures from January to March 2008 show that the average cost of residential property in the Gloucester area was ã163,513. This figure derives from a detached house average cost of ã253,130, a semi-detached average cost of£165,294, an average terraced house cost of ã141,417, and average flat cost of ã111,209 [3] . The city centre offers mainly terraced housing stock, whilst detached housing is the least available housing type in the area. The area of Quedgeley in the GL2 post code, near Gloucester Railway Station and Gloucester Maternity Hospital, offers semi-detached housing, which may suit families with children. Semi-detached housing is also predominant in the Churchdown district (GL3) and Abbeymead district (GL4), both east of the city centre. Detached housing can be found in the south east Gloucester district of Nailsworth (GL6), and also in Cirencester (GL7, connected to Gloucester via the A417), and Tetbury (GL8, south of the city). Hawkesbury Upton (GL9), just south of Tetbury, also offers detached housing as its main housing stock. These areas may be most suitable for couples with families seeking suitable housing not far from the city centre. Flats, not being the predominant housing stock in any district of the city, are much less readily available in Gloucester.
