What's it like to live in Arlesey?

What are the local amenities like? Are the people friendly?

    We moved to Arlesey about 3 months ago. My wife and I both work in London having lived in Islington central London previously. Arlesey is obviously a very different place to live compared to Islington, however we both absolutely love it. We sold our tiny two bed house in Islington for £400k and bought a huge four bed new build house on the high street in Arlesey for £316,000 (albeit from a bank as part of a reposession). We get the train into London every day and it has only been late once and my wife and I always get a seat. The people in Arlesey are really friendly. There are three pubs, of which we have been in two. There is the Old Oak by the station that we didn't really like as it doesn't feel like it is finished inside (and they don't accept cards as payment). The other pub we have been in is the White Horse which has recently got a new landlord and has been refurbished. This is a nice little pub, the landlord and landlady are both really friendly and it has a large park area outside for drinks in the summer and for kids to play in (when our niece and nephew visit). The food is good value although not particularly inventive. There are a few small convenience style shops in Arlesey, together with a hairdresser, post office and 3 or 4 takeaways down at the far end of the village at the opposite end to the train station. There are some nice walks around Arlesey (we often walk over the public footpath which takes you up towards Henlow. The Crown Pub in Henlow does excellent food, equivalent to some of the gastropubs in London. Local towns are Letchworth, Hitchin and Stevenage. Hitchin is the best of these three as it has a number of restaurants and pretty good shopping facilities. Stevenage is the closest place with large retail parks although Letchworth has a few as well.
