Is Ely a good area live?

    I would suggest that you look at the local authorities’ website or police.gov to see what the crime statistics etc for this area are. You can also look at the local tourist board website for that area which gives you an up to date overview of the area. I would also visit the area and ask some locals.

    In short - I don't think it is. No doubt like any other area there are nice people and those not so nice. However, Ely has a very bad reputation. "Secret Millionaire" filmed there, that may give you the low down! I have lived in Cardiff for 30 years and Ely's rreputation hasn't changed. The only thing different there is a new private housing estate. The following areas I believe are rough - Riverside, Grangetown, Ely, Canton (borderline of rough and ok), Llanrumney, Rumney (parts of). Try and buy in Lisvane, Cyncoed, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Heath, Roath Park, Llanishen, Gabalfa. In these parts, on the whole even ex-local authority housing is a safe bet as a nice area.

    Ely, was at one time, the largest council house estate in the UK. It is full of good and bad. Has all the issues of a large inner city estate.

    I have lived in Ely all my life. Ely is not a bad place to live - there are good and bad everywhere but unfortunately, because of the stigma that has been long attached to Ely, and the size of this vast Estate (where problems associated with smaller, more select areas, are less magnified) it is portrayed in a bad way. Ely is ideally situated in the City, good shopping, public transport and good access to M4 and coastal areas. Don't knock it till you try it lol!
