Has Rottingdean lost its charm?

As a teenager (in the 1970's) I used to spend a lot of time in Rottingdean - I worked at the Highcliff Restaurant (silver service!), The Coach House and The Old Place Club. My drinking places were the Black Horse, the Plough and I used to spend many summers on the beaches, swimming in the pool on the prom. My in-laws lived in Steyning Road. I don't go back there often, but I'm sure there have been some changes. How has it changed?

  • I think Rottingdean has retained its charm and in fact recently it has had new shops opening which contain beautifully locally made crafts. I would recommend you come back and visit

  • It has become more modernised the Plough has been "Modernised" !! All the pubs are struggling due to the financial climate, if your'e a sports fan the White Horse has a very large TV. I live in Ovingdean and it used to be a pleasure to walk down to Rottingdean for a pint, but for the last few years it just isn't worth it, the old regulars have gone, many drinking at home. The swimming pool you refer to must be the Saltdean Lido which is in one of its many phases of resurrection and doesn't attract me at all. Sorry to be so pessimistic, but you did ask.
