At what stage is it normal to exchange contracts? A day or so in advance of moving or a week or so?

  • What you are really asking is 'how long from exchange to completion'. (Completion is the day the seller gets paid, and you get the keys). The gap is largely how long it takes your mortgage lender's solicitors to register their charge. In the old days this was always set at four weeks. These days it is more like two.
