We have been here for 10 years now and came from Glasgow. The climate is better than the mainland in that it is milder. We get little or no snow and ice (apart from this year when we had a blizzard for about an hour last Tuesday evening which had melted by 10:00 p.m.) We do get it wet and windy during winter months which is to be expected on a coastal area. It is very safe here. The crime rate is virtually zero (or less). It is very safe for children. Shopping - well we are an island so most things have to be done on-line but the local supermarkets although small are excelent. We have a regional airport here served by Flybe and the ferries are good. We also get a 40% discount on airfares and they use a RET (road equvalent tariff) system on the ferries which means ferry fares are half what they were before. Schools are first class and better than their mainland counterparts. The only downside ias far as travel is concerned is the price of fuel (today 8th february 2010) I paid £1.27 per litre for diesel, and petrol is £1.26. However this is offset to a degree by the short milage we travel on the islands. From the north of North Uist to the south of South Uist is about 45 miles, so from here in Benbecula you can't go more than 25 miles in eithe direction. The scenery is fantastic and the beaches are probably among the bast in Europe. If anyone has any questions I will be only tpp pleased to help.

We would suggest that you get in touch with local estate agents in order to get some background about the area. You can search for agents using the ‘find agents’ tab on the top of the Zoopla Page.
We hope this helps.
