What are the fees for buying a property, legal, gov. fees etc?

How much does it cost by the time I exchange contract and take possesion?

  • Firstly there will be legal fees to your solicitor which could be £400 plus - ask a solicitor for a quote. Then mortgage arrangement fees which may be £1000 plus, contact a mortgage broker for a quote. Then you will have to pay stamp duty which is tax on your purchase and is dependent on how much you are paying for your property (see the link for stamp duty). Also you need to consider payment to a surveyor, the mortgage lender will require a valuation survey and you may want to pay for your own survey, surveys can start at approx. £300.
