I'm a first time buyer, can anyone offer any advice on where to start looking for my first property in Croydon?

Hi, a good place to start would be the zoopla property search. Have you spoken to an 'independent' mortgage advisor re your mortgage options and affordability? There was also a help scheme launched last month especially for First Time Buyers, see link below.

I would highly recommend Old Town Croydon, close to tram links, East London Line links, East Croydon station, and the proposed new mega shopping centre as well. I would be purchasing a property in Old Town Croydon before it's too late.
