Liverpool city centre for families.
Anyone with experience of this?

I think you would regret it: I am a Liverpudlian who revisits it often. Most of the flats are rented, there is little or no sense of community {ok if you are not looking for it I suppose]. The City centre is a dirty and noisy place. Youre kids would tire quickly of the family attractions in place of a decent park. Despite what developers claim I see little evidence of a pleasant 'vibe.' There's plenty of good residential areas to live in and enjoy close to the City which is just a few miles wide and deep anyway.
