Investment areas in South Manchester

Where should I invest? My Partner and I would love to buy in Chorlton (typical cafe culture, popular with young professionals) but with a 2 bed terrace at an average asking price of £240,000 it just feels like it's hit a ceiling. Where can we learn about other investment, up and coming areas? For example I read online about the 'Love Prestwich Strategy'. Are there any development or regeneration plans in place for other areas of South Manchester? Where will be the next Chorlton? And how long will it take to get there?

  • In South Manchester I would say Wythenshawe. This is because the Metrolink is currently under construction here, it's also near Airport City, also under construction, which will bring thousands of high-tech jobs to the area within the next 5-10 years. In addition, but a bit further down the timescale, there's planned to be a High Speed Rail station about a mile away at the Airport by the 2030s, which will bump prices up in the area. However this all sees a little long-term for what you're searching for. For me, the "next Chorlton" could potentially be around Firswood, because I think the wealth will spread around there next (only reason Chorlton is as expensive as it is is because wealth spread over from Didsbury). Firswood is one stop away from Chorlton on the Metro (and 10 mins from central Manchester), and prices are rising pretty quick as a result. Ed

  • Altrincham is a brilliant place to live. Having grown up there and lived away for the best part of 10 years in Northamptonshire, Oxford, Maidenhead and various parts of London - Altrincham is one of the best - but dont just base that on my argument..... Its less than 10 minutes from the 3rd largest airport in the UK, its 25 minutes by metrolink to the 2nd best city in the UK, its within 15 minutes of the M56, M6 and M60, its 5 minutes away from the amazing cheshire countryside.... Away from comms - it has the best schools in the UK, access to the countryside and a local market which is getting a lot of recognition for its apporach (guardian, ft, etc) In recent years the town has suffered - the retail and nightlife have both gone been in a bad way... but nightlife is really starting to come back with a great selection of bars from fine belgium bars, good "old man" pubs, a few wine bars and an assortment of others. The retail is slowly getting there but still a long way from where it was (though House of Fraser, Debenhams, H&H, River Island, Next and a good independent market is a solid foundation. It is one of the most expensive parts of MCR / Trafford - but its still got potential to rise - and in my opinion has a lot more going for it than Didsbury / Cholrton
