Melksham is a typical Wiltshire town. It is well placed geographically - 15 minutes from the M4, 25 minutes from the A303, 30 minutes from Bath (average traffic!), 45 minutes from Bristol (av) & 15 minutes from Devizes (good market on a Thursday). London is approx 2 hours. Melksham has a lovely old part around the church with old houses and cobbles. It also has pretty much every facility you need to be self sufficient in a town. The sports facilities need replacing, but plans are being discussed, the railway is next to useless as there are so few trains, but this looks as if it might improve soon but bus links are good. Melksham has more supermarkets and hairdressers than any other town I have ever known! It used to have a lovely riverside wooded walk, but Sainsbury's have just cut all the trees down to punish the locals for objecting to their expansion plans I think. As soon as Asda opens many of us will not shop in Sainsbury's any more because we feel they have behaved extremely badly. Waitrose is lovely but a bit expensive for every day. There are various community groups, yoga classes, mother & toddler groups, kayaking club on the river Avon, gyms, a swimming pool, sports centre, park & playgrounds, everything you would expect. There are some good restaurants - Ku Thai/Malasian/Chinese is the best restaurant in town by far - really superb and very friendly staff (the chef/owner comes out to talk to the customers all the time) and there are a number of Indian restauants - personally I think Refa Tandoori is the best - just ignore the decor!! For pizzas you can't beat Mamma Mia's takeaway. Schools are all reasonable at primary level and there is a brand new secondary school which is no doubt 'state of the art'.

I would suggest that you look at the local authorities’ website or police.gov to see what the crime statistics etc for this area are . You can also look at the local tourist board website for that area which gives you an up to date overview of the area. I would also visit the area and ask some locals.
