Is Farnham a good place to live?

Depends what youre after, and the sort of person you are.
We lived there, close to the town centre, from 2005-2010. The good state schools are very over-subscribed, and property prices are stunted in the catchment areas as a result. It suffers from bad road traffic during rush hours and on weekends, both in town and around the Shepherd and Flock roundabout. The town centre is certainly pretty in parts (except Woolmead) and there's a good selection of shops. It also has a tangible evening economy of popular restaurants and bars.
We left for the following reasons
1) Couldnt afford a larger house in a better school catchment area for our growing family
2) Parking in our road was horrendous, especially after the council approved a nonsensical block of apartments at the corner of our road.
3) If you commute into London (Waterloo) by train, the service is crowded and not frequent enough. Farnham station is effectively served by a branchline to Alton. I found this tiring and wanted to move closer to London.
No, I dont miss anything about it. And we moved to Farnborough, which has a very run down town centre. However, it has a smart resindential area around the park, much better value property, and a very fast and regular train service to London and the SW coast, plus uniformly good/excellent schools. Much happier.
