  • Some pubs, a few with good food. Some shops but houses really are overpriced. Most of town has been flooded at some point though new flood defences are in place(untested). Main road runs through centre and is too narrow for traffic volume, as is the bridge over the river Usk. The river is sublime but it's threat is always subliminal. Primary school was useless but is now under new management. We shall have to wait for next set of reports. Senior school is via a school bus at Caerleon. Castle is intriguing but one visit is enough. Raglan Castle nearby deserves another visit. Usk people speak disparingly about the people of Pontypool, though I'm told the latter say the same of Blaenavon. Usk has a fairly large prison and a few miles outside Usk there is another (open) prison. Escapees make for Usk on the odd occasion, the resulting helicopter searches make for good conversation in a particularly friendly cafe by the always busy (but free)car park and recycling centre. There is a GP practice. The main street doesn't see the sun but there is a square which does, and sipping a pint of fine ale there is a particularly happy past-time. There are a couple of places for children to play, teenagers will have little to do though and will rely on the parental taxi. I have no idea where they might go as Newport gets ugly after 6pm (earlier sometimes). Presumably they work hard and strive for a University place in England which is easy to get to as Usk is only 25 minutes away from the Severn Bridge. There are a number of short but pleasant walks around Usk but it could really do with more facilities like a leisure centre similar to one of Torfaen's jewels, in Pontypool, whose ski slope is a joy to behold in the snow. There is a lovely chippie by the square. My favourite thing to do in Usk is to eat fish and chips .This just about sums me up. In a funny sort of way it sums up Usk too.

  • Hi, We would suggest that you get in touch with local estate agents in order to get some background about the area. You can search for agents using the ‘find agents’ tab on the top of the Zoopla Page. We hope this helps.
