House To Home have a small write-up on how to build a side-return extension (where you enlarge a room by reclaiming the space occupied by a path running alongside the house). It includes some websites/phone numbers that may be of use:

Yes - make sure you do extensive planning research first as to what you can and can't do. This can be disruptive and intrusive work for your neighbours and its best to keep any future complaints and interference to a minimum.

One of the most amazing aspects of doing a side return is that initially you may find yourself looking at the space within the return and ask if your think you are getting value for money. Lets face it, its such a short space and can it really be worth it? Well for someone who has moved house loads of times and have had the pleasure of building 3 side returns on some lovely Victorian houses I can assure you that if the job is done nicely it will be worth every penny. As for value I believe the latest figures for a side return or wraparound extension is that they will add approx 15% to the value of your house so do the numbers and get an estate agent around to give you some advice. Good luck with your project and if you need architect quotes use the reference as it is probably the best site in the UK to get quotes for architects services.
