Would a spiral staircase add value to my property and could I get away with using it as a balcony?

We don't get on with the neighbours so need to say it is a staircase and not a balcony. Would the planners even think we would use it as a balcony? The application will go in as a staircase.

  • I presume you mean this would be an external spiral staircase as you want to use it as a balcony as well. If it is external you would be wise to contact the council to see if you need planning permission.

  • You may also need to check building control to ensure of the safety of the structure. As to whether it would add value to your property does rather depend on the style and character of the property and the space you you availble for it. They, quite surprisingly, take up more space than you might have expected.

  • Spirals look great depending on how the they are used and in what environment. Without a clear indication as to what the intended use is then I would tread carefully as not everybody like them...
