Once you've found a property you like the look of it's worth going over it yourself instead of spending £300-600 for a surveyor to assess the property. Look for potential problems with cracks, the chimney, the roof, drains and signs of fungal and timber decay.

There are a good number of "projects" in Stoke On Trent due to the surplus of older housing stock. You can find a number of projects by registering with local agents who have these types of properties coming onto the market. There is also a large auction house BJB which runs regular property auctions and where you will find a number of projects. You could also contact the council which runs an empty homes scheme and looks for people to put empty homes back into use by way of making improvements
