Solar panels PV - what value do they add?

If I spend £6k on solar pv and they have a FIT value and money off bills for ever - surely they add some value?

  • If I spend £6k on solar pv and they have a FIT value and money off bills for ever - surely they add some value? Hi Leeloups66, the solar panel installation for £6k won't actually provide money off bills forever, nor will they provide an FIT income forever. Solar PV panels generally last around 25 years before they need to be replaced, so that would mean another cost to fit more. Likewise, when you sign up to the Feed-in Tariff, your income is only guaranteed for the next 25 years. However, they can add value to your home in the long run, as more and more people are now looking for energy efficiency in the home at a time when electricity bills are getting increasingly higher. And of course, they do also have the bonus that you will have little to no expenditure for your bills for the life cycle of the panels themselves. Thanks, Scott

  • They may deter some buyers who think they are ugly. I haven't seen any great increases in value after fitting. It's still a newish thing so in a few years this may change!

  • Hi, When thinking about solar panels it is not necessarily a feature that will add value to the property as usually there is a 25 year lease of the roof of the property and this could be tricky when looking at selling your property if the lease is still in place. However it may be attractive to potential buyers in terms of saving money on bills as well as the environmental impact however we would advise you be thoughtful when thinking of installing solar panels. We hope this helps.
