Is it worth obtaining freehold on a house?

I own the leashold (85 years left) on a 2 bed house in N16, London, which was recently valued at £375K. (estate agent valuation) Roughly how much more would the property be worth if I were to obtain the freehold?

  • I would say it's definitely worth your while doing this. Although an 85 year lease is pretty much full open market value (the value really only starts to be affected when it drops below 80 years), by buying the freehold (if you can afford to do this) you will be in total control of any outgoings/ service charges for maintaining your building. Plus, it is being asked for more and more by buyers and will definitely help you when you come to sell. Good luck.
