Renting with bad debt

My daughter is looking to rent her first property with her boyfriend. They have been turned down by one agent as he has a bad debt from when he was 17 for car insurance. He is now 23 and they are expecting a baby - they are desperate to rent and have good salaries coming in - would any agent consider them as tenants? Thanks

  • Hi moonchild, It certainly is possible to rent even with bad credit, yes. Many lettings agents do not actually do credit checks, so it can be a case of just trying a few different companies, and you may find that your daughter is able to find one who won't. Even for those who do carry out credit checks, however, there are ways to get around the problem. Those with a bad credit will often offer to pay a few months of their rent in advance, for example, while others will look at getting a guarantor, who provides a letter to say they are legally responsible for the rental payments if the tenant fails to keep up. Any good references from former landlords, or things such as a larger security deposit will also help to shine a good light on a potential tenant and help them to get a tenancy. Many thanks, Scott
