Is it illegal to rent a holiday apartment in New York city?

I am thinking of renting a holiday apartment in New York city for 7 nights but been told that it is illegal to do so.

  I can honestly say I have never heard either way, whether it’s legal or not and I would not know where to recommend checking for this sort of information Maybe Google?
