Guarantor and unemployed/housing benefits question?

Hi, I was wondering could someone answer the following question for me. I am currently unemployed but moving to Glasgow. I have savings and a good credit rating and am looking to rent. I have spoken to estate agents and it seems that it is at their discretion if they will rent to me, which is fine, some ask for months of upfront rent and/or a guarantor. My issue currently is, if I do either or both of the scenarios, and I happen to be unable to find work, would I be eligible for any money from the Housing Association towards the property or would they just chase my guarantor for the money. I have never signed on before so I am unsure on the process, and I am looking at this as a worst case scenario if say in 6 months or later I still do not have work, I would not want my Father (guarantor) to be stuck with the bill. Obviously I expect to be able to find some kind of work even if it was just to pay the bills rather than claim. Any help would be appreciated.

  • It's hard and depends on the landlord, make sure you get everything in writing but thats what a guarantor is for if you can't pay, you can get housing benefits but some landlords dislike this so make sure they are sure as they could kick you out if its in the contract. you can always start looking for work before moving get some stuff lined up proof your trying to the agent etc.

  • I ve always rented while signing on doing the following.Look for private landlords if possible or small offices, major rental companies do not care at all to get into this unless you pay them in advance a year ,and then claim whatever back from the benefit agency.I have done that in ashford ,(paid 12 months in advance no questions asked for a detached 3 bed house with garage and garden.the benefit people came, checked it,said that we had 1 room more than what we should, and paid us backdated from the day1 80% of the rent(which at the time was 1000 pounds/p.m. ).We received after a few weeks a big check with if i am not wrong around 7000 quid.On another occasion i rented in ramsgate a 1 bedroom flat ,again 3 months in advance, and no questions asked, from a small company in thannet....I guess money opens doors...:):)but you knew that!good luck.Just be honest with people, you wil find they apreciate it a lot more than you thought.(provided yo have the cash of course)!!:)
