  • Hi benje66, Yes, you certainly can rent a room when you are on DSS, although you may find it slightly more difficult to do so, as landlords can often opt not to rent to tenants who are receiving these benefits. While for some it can be a personal choice, there are also reasons why landlords don't accept tenants who receive DSS payments. These can include the fact that many buy-to-let mortgages will have an explicit condition that they can't let to DSS renters, while in other cases it can be issues to do with a change in regulations that meant councils no longer pay money directly to landlords, meaning it becomes a far trickier situation to receive regular rental payments. However, the best way to find a rental home in Harrogate that will accept people on DSS is to get in touch with the local council's housing department. This will often keep details to hand of private landlords who will rent to DSS clients in order to help ease their own housing waiting lists, so they may be able to put you in touch with someone who will be able to help you out. Harrogate Borough Council's housing department can be reached on 01423 500 600. Thanks, Scott
