Yes you can but if you are on housing benefit you may find your benefit restricted unless you have a special circumstance - talk to your local council. If on benefit you may also require a guarantor.

Note that if you will be claiming Housing Benefit, the rules change on 1 January 2011, so that people under 35 will only receive the 'Local Housing Allowance' rate for renting a room in a shared house

Yes... If you claim housing benefit your LHA rate will be for a shared rate.. if you are a care leaver you will be entitled to a 1 bed rate...Ensure you claim before your peach age 21 though as then you will only be entitled to a shared rate.
