How do I go about renting for the first time?

Me and my boyfriend are 19 and would like to start renting for the first time, but don't know how to go about doing it and what needs to be done.

  • The best thing to do is to register with all letting agents in your area and specify exactly what you're looking for, budget etc They will then contact you as soon as properties become available to arrange viewings and to advise you further. Click on 'Estate Agents' and 'Find Estate Agents' for Agents in your area.

  • It is most advisable to contact lettings agents, and let them know about your situation, what you are looking for, and what your budget is. If they don't have something available for you now, they will contact you when they do. It may be worth speaking to quite a few, to get more people looking for you. The process is that if the agency has something that interests you, you can arrange a viewing. If you like the apartment after viewing, you can then place an offer down on the apartment. The agency will then contact the landlord and inform them of your offer. Once the landlord has accepted the offer, the agency will let you know, and you will then be sent all the necessary referencing documents. You will normally be asked for a minimum of 1 months rent in advance, along with a 6 weeks deposit. Once all referencing has completed, you will be asked to clear the outstanding monies, and you'll be good to move in. Hope this helps!!
