Are there flats in with air conditioners

I have been told that no one in England with the exception of business's that no one living in a house or flat has air conditioning and I still find this hard to believe. However, if I find a flat I like and it doesn't have AC can I have one installed? Opening up the windows may sound resonable to most but during the summer time, I like to be comfortable. I most probably will work at home, so it's important for me. I have also, been told that no one has screens on their windows and when I raised that question as to why not??? most laugh. Ok, I have been to England several times, last year was just beautiful weather, in early September. But looking at it year in and out, are there any concessions?

  • Hot and humid days when air conditioning is desirable are verry rare in England. If you are buying property then you could install air conditioning (though depending on the property there may be issues with planning condition). If you are renting I doubt any landlord would consider the trouble and expense worth while unless you are willing to pay an exceptionally higher rent. Similarly apart from the midges of the highlands you are unlikely to need screens to keep insects out. (If by 'screens' you mean shutters, then you obviously have not encountered the usual English summer.
