What do I need to know when renting for the first time?

Depending on whether you are going through agents which means that you will have to swear a statutory declaration that you will move out of the premises after the period has finished which costs about £5.00 but you have to go to a solicitor to swear it (this is where the fee comes from) then you will probably have to give a three month rent deposit so if you damage any of the flat or house that you are renting then the Landlord has some money from you to repair the damage as well as paying the rent, council tax, electricity, gas and telephone bills. You normally have to pay the rent by direct debit so the Landlord gets his money before anything else and you normally rent flats unfurnished and so you will have to get furnishings. Sometimes the cooker is very old and fridge, washing machines/dryers are sometimes there but I have been in one that did not with a seven month old baby! very hard going. Once you start on the renting front it is very difficult to save especially in London but you really need about £10,000 to get started. Hope this helps
