Looking to Rent in Brighton/Worthing

I have recently been made redundant so am selling up and would like to move to the south coast. The first estate agent I went to has said they won't allow me to register with them until I have a job (or job offer) showing my salary details. Is this normal practice and will all agents say the same?

  • Hi Silk2011 This should not be the case for every single estate agent that you come across, but each will have their own rules. Obviously, from their point of view agents like tenants with a job as this provides some guarantee that the rent will be paid every month as they know that you have a constant stream of money coming in. However, there are plenty of people who manage to rent who do not have a job - whether this is because they have sold up or have been handed down money in a will. You might be able to find agents who will want a bigger deposit - giving them extra protection - while others will ask for a guarantor to cover you if you are ever unable to pay your rent. It is likely that you will need to provide a guarantor when you start your new job and they will be expected to pay the rent should there be a default during your tenancy. Good luck with your search!
