Can landlord increase my rent by 50%?

  • He can only increase your rent if the Tenancy Agreement makes provision for it. Otherwise he can only increase it by a) renewing the contract at the end of the fixed term at an increased rent or b) At the end of the fixed term, serve a Section 13(2) Notice of the Housing Act 1988 proposing an increase in rent. If you've been a exemplary tenant, the landlord will not want to risk losing you by increasing the rent too much!
