It is possible, and it will certainly save you an administration fee and possible a feference check. Be wary though - if you're not using an agent, who will be holding the deposit? Will the Landlored be swift to make any repairs?..........

There are many landlords who rent properties privately. Most are reputable however there are know scams. You should always make sure the person you are dealing with owns the property or has the authority to rent it. Obtain a receipt for any money handed over and make sure you agree everything in writing. The landlord should provide a Tenancy Agreement that is fair to both parties. It is a legal requirement that they register the deposit and provide you with a copy of the certificate.
