Can a couple rent with only one being credit checked?

I have been renting my current property for the past 18 years - no missed payments for rent or bills. We need to move soon (the landlord has not maintained the property and the structure is becoming unsound). However, I have been on a DMP for the last 3 years (about half way through) - again, no payments missed and my finances are back on track. Hubby's credit rating is spotless. Can we rent a property just in his name and both live there. Obviously my credit rating will affect any checks that are done if I am included? Thanks

  • Hi Ossiesmum, I’m afraid you’re going to find this absolutely everywhere except possibly with Estate Agents who might be a bit, shall we say, disrep people than some others. Do be careful of who you are passing money over to. If they tell you that it’s actually fine, they don’t need checks. Don’t get involved with a rogue agent or rogue landlord. You can always go to small ads, news-agent’s windows where private landlords do advertise. They don’t normally do credit checks, but they will be looking for references. So, if you have previous landlords, friends who perhaps have got a business, ex-employer, or something like that, then you might find that you can get a property that way. Don't hesitate to get in contact if you need anymore advice. Regards, Jonathan Rolande :)
