Renting with credit problems

Will it be a problem to rent with my husband if I have a public record on my credit file? (We have privately rented for 5.5years with no problems. )

  • Hi Sjw268, If you have a poor credit history, there can be issues that will arise with regards to securing a tenancy. Some letting agents will carry out a credit check at early stages and reject an application if you should happen to fail it. However, there are ways around this. For one thing, you will find that there are many letting agents who do not even carry out credit checks at all. In addition to this, there are ways around a failed check as well. For example, if you have a guarantor who can provide you with a letter that states they will take responsibility for the rent legally, then many agents will accept this. The fact that you say you have over five years rental experience will also mean that you should have access to a number of potential referees who can give you a reference to prove you are a reliable tenant. Finally, if you are able to pay a few months of rent in advance, this can help to sweeten the deal for agents. Many thanks, Scott
