  • I would say about a month would be a good idea as that´s the usual notice period. It can sometimes take longer for a property to be ready if there´s a lot of refurbishment. Good luck with your search.

  • Hi RandomNerd, this will depend heavily on the particular area that you're moving to. I'm not going to pretend to know Southampton, but here in Coventry we tend to advise landlords looking for tenants to advertise 4 - 6 weeks in advance (with the exception of students). This also works in reverse, and we advise tenants to start looking around 4-6 weeks in advance. Hopefully somebody will be able to come along who knows Southampton and be able to give you an idea about that specific area.

  • Most landlords advertise their properties about 2 months before they become available, that's because the outgoing tenant usually has to give 2 months notice. The earlier you start, the more choice of properties you will have. And there is no harm making contact with some letting agents as soon as possible; providing them with your criteria and timescales. If you are planning on moving in less than 2 months, don't worry. There will probably still be properties available. In fact I've known people who have managed to find a place within a week.
