  • It depends on what you are looking for. Newport is closer to Llantarnam so it is only a short commute for work and it's more likely to be cheaper to live in, depending on where you rent. However, if you are looking for nightlife/socialising or shopping, Cardiff is generally better as there is a lot more choice available to you. Cwmbran (close to Llantarnam - between a 10 - 20 minute drive depending on where in Newport you would potentially be looking to live) has a fairly decent shopping centre with free parking 24/7 and although smaller than Newport and Cardiff has several major supermarkets dotted around the town centre. There is a Cinema complex and there are a few pubs around Cwmbran but it's not the type of place where you would generally go for a night out if you were looking to go from pub to pub. Rail links between Newport and Cardiff are pretty decent and regular but the nearest station to Llantarnam is around 5 miles so it wouldn't be any good for commuting. Current price for a return ticket between Newport and Cardiff is around £5.00. There's pros and cons for living in each area and I hope this helps. Good luck with your move.
