Fishponds Bristol, what's it like?

Looking at moving to Bristol within a 10 mile radius. Husband commutes from Wiltshire at the moment, so want to move closer to Bristol, what's Fishponds like or Horfield, Bradley Stoke, Filton, pleases can you tell me good areas? I know to avoid Knowle and St Pauls but can't find out about other areas. Help would be much appreciated, thank you.

  • My parents live in Fishponds, in Bristol, and having visited the area a few times, I have never noticed a problem. In fact, it looks like a nice place to live (my parents are particular, and would have checked the area fully before moving there). Nice park in the main shopping area, two supermarkets, and good public transport. But I have included a link from Upmystreet which gives some background information.

  • Hi, I live in Fishponds and it is a very reasonable area. Filton is the worst of the places you mention and Horfield probably the best, but also most expensive. It's at the upper end of the popular Gloucester Road with many pubs/bars. Fishponds has less of this 'yuppy' culture but more restaurants/cafes are creaping in here, and in my opinion, is probably the next part of Bristol to change for the better (like Horfield did about ten years ago). It is a mix of nice victorian properties, some modest 1930's semis and then some not so nice modern/council housing, which gives the area a real mix people-wise. Bradley Stoke is OK if you don't want to get to know your neighbours, don't mind driving to any pub/bar/shop and/or want to be near the M4/M5. It is boring and far out of the city, but reasonable price-wise. Knowle is actually very nice - decent victorian properties for much less than in Bishopston/Horfield, and is very close to the centre. It is Knowle West council estate and the oft-confused Filwood that you want to avoid. Hope this helps.

  • I like Fishponds. There is a lovely mix of people and the properties are very easy to sell as its a desirable area. The schools are not fantastic, but many children attend Downend High school which is approx. 2.5 miles away. I live in Staple Hill (just up the road from Fishponds) and I am happy there. I do not think you will have any issues. Like in most areas, there are the good parts and the...not so good parts. Should you have any questions, please drop me a line. All the best and good luck.
