What's it like to live in Bensham, Gateshead?

Currently renting in Jesmond (too many students) but looking to buy next year. Bensham looks very affordable but concerned about possible crime/antisocial behaviour. I don't want a bigger house at the cost of feeling unsafe. Does anyone live here currently? Would you recommend it?

  • Hi Laurahall85, While I don't live in the area myself, I have had a look at police.uk (where you can see some of the most up to date information on crime rates from certain areas), and have found that the crime rates seen in this area, and Gateshead as a whole, are lower than you might think. With prices in the north often being a lot lower than elsewhere in the country, it's easy to see why they are preferable at the moment, but you should not have too much to worry about in the area in terms of safety. In October 2012, there were 154 incidents of crime reported to police within half a mile of this area. This was below the national average. And overall for Gateshead, the crime rate is lower than both areas of a similar size and the Northumbria Police region as a whole.

  • I would recommend living in Bensham. I have lived there all my life with no problems at all, until I had kids and moved, my oldest is 16 now and I am trying to get back down to Bensham. I have always loved the area.
