Is Barton in Headington a good place to live?

I've heard it once had a bad reputation, and need advice re. is it safe for a young family? The property prices are much lower, making me think that it is not a good area, but I don't know if things have changed?

  • The best way to establish this would be to visit the area personally at the weekend, during the week and once in the evening.

  • I would suggest that you look at the local authorities’ website or to see what the crime statistics etc for this area are. You can also look at the local tourist board website for that area which gives you an up to date overview of the area. I would also visit the area and ask some locals.

  • Avoid barton. It has a poor reputaion- and will have that for a long time. Everywhere round it is fine, eg Green Ridges,Risinghurst, Sandhill, Marston, Headington. Cowley is dearer than Barton, but will be a much better buy long term. Property is much cheaper in Barton because when you buy a house, you are paying for the neighbours. Do yourself a favour and don't buy in Barton. Good luck. T

  • I lived there until twelve years ago. I would not return... The reason we moved out was my son was five and he was young... Local school in Headington was as good as any school can be. He has so many memories of his great life there.. His parents remember hiding on Halloween....

  • The further down into Barton that you get, the less pleasant it becomes. However the newer build flats and houses nearer the ring road (Bayswater Road / Sherwood Place) have changed the general feel and are absolutely fine. As long as you get into a Headington School that will be very good. I lived on Sherwood Place for 5 years and loved it - never had any issues with neighborhood at all.

  • Barton used to have a reputation, but now the new houses have been built there are a lot of profession people, nurses, teachers policemen living there. I used to be in the same mind as you, but I have lived here 8 years and the one thing I will say is the neighbourhood spirit is amazing. There are bad bits in every estate, but we have never had any trouble.

  • It's a long time since I lived in Oxford, but then it was not a very nice area. Lots of busy roads and traffic for the M40, and lots of cheap (for Oxford) ex local authority housing and social housing. I think you'd need to see it and judge for yourself things may well have changed since 1995!
