I've had a look around to find out more information on the Leicestershire area of Wigston that you are looking at.
Some general information on the village shows that it has around 30,000 people living there, which means that it is a lot quieter than many other towns and cities around - ideal for an older person.
There are a number of smaller and independent shops in the village, as well as access to surrounding areas by bus, which may be important to you. Activity wise, there is also a floral society if getting involved with the community side of things is your prerogative.
In terms of safety, a search on police.uk shows that Wigston has a very low crime rate which sits below even those seen in settlements around England and Wales, meaning it is a very safe place to live relatively.

Wigston is just nice. Not too posh, not too scummy. Christopher

My in laws live in Wigston and are in their 70s.There are lots of supermarkets and shops although South Wigston shopping area is tired and rundown. Not a particularly sought after area and a lot of the housing is rather unattractive and parking can be a problem. They have had some some problems with unsociable behaviour but live near to the Police Staion. Lots of nicer areas in my opinion(Bushby , Thurnby, Oadby etc).
