Selling house without the agent - would it put you off?

I am thinking about selling my house privately (using an online agent) and would like to know how buyers feel about dealing directly with the owner. Would it put you off or would you prefer that direct contact without the agent in the middle. I would love to hear your opinions.

  • It is an interesting one. I think it would put me off because dealing with an agent you are dealing with a business who has insurance and accountability. Dealing with an individual who doesn't really know the ins and outs of selling a house means something could be missed or left out that could come bite me as a buyer a few months or even years later and I shall have no come back.

  • Thank you this is really helpful! Funny enough I prefer to deal with the owners of the property rather than the agents but perhaps I am in minority.

  • All the Estate Agents I have dealt with were commission greedy and stressed for a sale in 07 when property market began its downturn, I much rather deal with the sale of my property myself and can answer any questions potential buyers may ask me... ok if someone has the luxury of spare time... Estate Agents don't give accurate valuations on property, only independent value staff like surveyors can give an accurate price.... I was once told by an E A quite a bit of work I had done to my place such as new kitchen and off road parking wouldn't add value to it, it just makes it more attractive if sold. Then a surveyor gave me an accurate property price before and after the work was done and it was well worth it... the price had increased.. Estate Agents who are honest are very the south east especially...

  • 1. If you are selling without an agent how will I find out your property is for sale.? 2. I don't like being shown round a property by the owner, I prefer to be rude about what I see rather than polite.

  • There are property websites that advertise your home for sale and arrange a time mutually acceptable to seller and buyer but they let the owner show buyers around.. who better to answer questions about the property than the owner, they know the history of the place and what work has been done to it and when and they can give advice on the area and even the town or city if needs be... I don't want rude people in my place so thanks for letting me know your low I Q, Being direct is not being rude anyway its just more abrupt.

  • Hi, Anyone can sell their own home, however there are a variety of different risks you need to consider when selling privately. We recently blogged about this issue and why it may be best for you to use an estate agent when selling your property. Having that point of contact will benefit both yourself as the seller and also potential buyers. An estate agent can bridge the gap effectively between seller and buyer, often having a buyer lined up for a certain type of property that comes to the market, or alternatively have interested buyers in mind and registered with them that would be suited to your property. I've attached the blog for you below. Best of luck in the sale of your property.
