Will it add value to the selling of a home if it is updated in neutral colours and same with carpets?

My parents house is very dated, will paper and paint and new carpets make any difference to the value of the house or will it just make it more saleable?

  • No, although it may make it more appealing to a buyer so it could help sell it.

  • If the rest of the property (kitchen, bathrooms, wiring etc) is also very dated, redecorating is likely to have little impact. If the house is generally in good order with just the wall coverings and carperts dated, then it is certainly worth spending a couple of thousand on having this done as you are both likely to find a buyer more easily and more than recoup the cost. Remember, though, that many purchasers do like to take on some work and love to have a blank canvass!

  • Busy painting mine neutral, from feedback I've had so far, tell you what it looks a lot bigger too! Leaving my carpets though.
