Is a 45 minute travel from home to work in London Central common?
The Family's moving in with dad who will work in Central London, we are considering a house to rent in Newham or Reading. Is that wise?

A lot of people live in greater London and commute to central London so yes it is common especially for families with children. If you have a choice though try and find accommodation which is connected to the underground network 'the tube' as these are generally speaking more frequent than the train. Experience from living and working in London.

You're better off getting a scooter/motorbike: cheaper to run, guaranteed seat, more independence, quicker to get to where you need to, no Congestion Charge and at the end of year you still have an asset.
