Leisure

Steeped in local history, the area of Stella was first mentioned in around 1150 when it was given to St Bartholomew and the Nuns of Newcastle by the Bishop of Durham. Later a famous battle was fought here in 1640, the Battle of Newburn Forge, between the English and Scots. The site of Stella Riverside was a former power station which was constructed between 1951 and 1954, with its coal being transported on barges using the River Tyne. This type of power station, known as 'brick cathedrals' used around 2, 300 tons of coal per day and by the 1980's was deemed to be inefficient. The station was closed in 1990 and was eventually demolished, with the site being cleared for redevelopment in 1996. In addition, the Blaydon Races original site lies to the east of the development, although the site of the Races is now Blaydon Railway Station. These impromptu horse races formed part of the annual fair known as 'The Hoppings'. The final race meeting was held on 2nd September 1912 at Stella Haugh, the site of this new development. And the course is believed to have been visible until the construction of the Stella South Power Station. Today you can find the exciting new development of Stella Riverside with its interesting history, located off the Blaydon to Ryton road, as well as to the south of Newburn Bridge.
