Property description
The Property
'The Captain's House' offers exceptionally proportioned accommodation and, between 2006 and 2009, has undergone a complete and sympathetic restoration to bring the house back to its former grandeur. Combining the latest ground source geothermic heating and rainwater harvesting system and uncompromising attention to detail during this project, have all created a stunning home of rarely seen proportions, yet fairly inexpensive to run.
Enjoying a southerly-facing position in this quiet hamlet, 'The Captain's House' enjoys superb views over its private gardens to the surrounding lightly wooded countryside.
Throughout, painstaking attention to detail has successfully brought this property back to its former glory, including traditional double height skirting boards throughout, all seven fireplaces have been restored to working order with every chimney lined with a 9 flue, Georgian-style 7'6 box sash double glazed windows and 8' timber double glazed doors to maximise light and views, engineered wood flooring throughout the downstairs (except kitchen/diner) with 35 year guarantees, handcrafted and turned staircase and balustrades and solid oak doors throughout. The accommodation, as one would expect from a new conversion, has been beautifully appointed and benefits from particularly high ceilings throughout, and includes a magnificent living room with superb exposed cut granite block chimney breast, enjoying the southerly views across the gardens to the surrounding countryside, beautifully appointed and spacious kitchen/dining room, downstairs dining room/study, or if preferred, fifth bedroom and separate WC. Upstairs you will find the master bedroom suite, with dressing room and en-suite shower room, in addition to three further double bedrooms, one including an en-suite shower room and family bathroom with three of the bedrooms enjoying the southerly views.
All in all, a superb opportunity for those discerning purchasers who require a substantial property, including the latest energy-saving systems in this convenient and tranquil location, and, as the vendors' Sole Agents, we strongly recommend an early viewing is made to avoid disappointment.
Historical Note
'The Captain's House' can be traced back through local records to the 1740's, when it was used as the main residence and office for the famous Gwennap Copper mine Estate. In 1764 it was turned into a mine captain's school, training wealthy young men in the skill of the industry, with one side accommodating classroom and boarding room and the other serving as the main residence for the school master. At this time, it was reputed to be known as Trevarth House Grammar School, at which point in the early 1800's this particular area of Cornwall was known as 'The Copper Kingdom' and one of the richest counties anywhere in the world. During the late 1800's, the Cornish mining industry collapsed and so the school became a grammar school for boys and 'young ladies'. In the early 19th Century it was taken over by a neighbouring farm and has been used as a barn until, the present owners began work in 2006 to return it to its former glory.
The Location
Trevarth is an exceptionally quiet, small rural hamlet, comprising just a handful of properties, within approximately six or seven miles of the western outskirts of the cathedral city of Truro.
The A30 trunk road is within a few minutes drive of the property and provides rapid and easy access around and out of the county; Newquay Airport being within a 30-minute drive. Both the north and south coasts of Cornwall are close at hand; the south coast providing some of the best day-sailing waters in the country, the north coast offering a more rugged coastline with breathtaking clifftop walks and many surfing beaches.
