History of Belmont House
Belmont House was reportedly built in 1795 for a trader with the East India company., but soon passed through the hands of an Irish absentee landlord to those of a wealthy but unmarried merchant. It stayed in the family for the next hundred years and was often let to distinguished visitors, including the duchess of Kent and her daughter, the future Queen Victoria. Princess Victoria beloved secrets garden with its private door, remain features of the estate.
The dramatic political intrigues of Victoria early years played themselves out in the verandas and mullioned bay of Belmont house, as did private, homely girlhood tragedies- her pet donkey is buried in the grounds, watched over by the round, battlemented flint tower. Today donkeys still ply the beaches and on special occasions the local parade the cliff in Victoria costume. Between the wars Belmont housed a girl, school until the army took over in 1939. With Victoria, it became a hotel foe two years, after which the sisters of Bon Secours converted it into a nursing home.
