The farmhouse, which is Grade II listed, due to its architecturally interesting features, dates back to the 17th Century and includes a number of attractive period features including exposed beams, salt box beside an inglenook fireplace and a witch post dated 1664.
The sale of Postgate Farm really is a genuinely rare opportunity to purchase the property, as it has been in the ownership of the same family for over 300 years. Indeed, one of the main external features is the arched stone porchway which features initials of a family ancestor, dated 1784.
One of the traditional buildings, erected in 1839, features a carved stone head on the gable, characteristic of the work by John Castillo. Other traditional buildings have had a variety of uses over the years including previously serving the community as a tailors, blacksmiths and joiners shop. In recent years the farmhouse has been the main residence of the working sheep farm, whilst also being operating as bed and breakfast accommodation. Postgate Farm is set amidst open countryside approximately 1 ½ miles west of village on the road to Glaisdale Head. Glaisdale is a thriving moorland village located within the beautiful scenery of the North York Moors National Park. The village benefits from a range of amenities including post office and general store, butcher's shop, primary school and public house. More comprehensive facilities can be found in Whitby to which there are rail links and a bus service Monday to Saturday.
Postgate Farmhouse stands in a prominent position and one of the first things visitors notice are the far reaching views over the dale. The property is constructed of herringbone stone under a pitched pantile roof. The property currently operates as a bed and breakfast establishment and the addition of two separate staircases provides a flexible living space.
