Sunnyside, Tarbert, Argyll

Situation

Sunnyside has a private position, two miles south of the fishing village of Tarbert. Screened from the road by a belt of mature trees which provide both privacy and shelter, it has a lovely position near the head of West Loch Tarbert.

Tarbert, on Loch Fyne, is a fishing village and a popular tourist destination famed for its seafood. In the summer it is host to the Scottish Series - Scotland's largest sailing regatta and has a 9 hole golf course. There are regular ferry services from Tarbert to Islay, Jura and Colonsay. There is also a service between Tarbert and Portavadie on the Cowal peninsula, offering an alternative route, via Dunoon, to Glasgow. There is also a ferry from Clonaig to Arran and a daily flight from Machrihanish near Campbeltown to Glasgow. There are 2 major golf courses at Machrihanish, numerous fishing lochs, stalking, pheasant and rough shooting in the area. Campbeltown has an extensive range of shops and services including a swimming pool, secondary school and a number of supermarkets. Sunnyside is a charming country house dating from 1850 which has been professionally extended by the present owners over the last 25 years, using only the best materials. It has been fastidiously maintained and is presented in excellent decorative order and offers flexible family accommodation over two levels.

An entrance porch with seating area and vaulted ceiling leads to a broad welcoming hallway with dining room and two staircases. Opening off the hallway are a conservatory, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and drawing room. The kitchen is well fitted with Shaker style units at wall and counter level, hand built by Monzie cabinet makers from Perthshire. The worktops are a combination of marble and solid wood. There is a small electric hob and a two oven Aga. From the kitchen steps ascend to the breakfast room which is glazed to full length on one wall.

The drawing room is quite substantial measuring 20'1 x 25'1 with a large open fire dominating the focal wall. Off the drawing room and kitchen is a back lobby with back door and access to en suite bedroom and large utility room. The utility room is fitted with a Belfast sink and leads to a wine store and a boiler room which is well equipped for drying boots and outdoor gear.

There are two staircases in Sunnyside. The first leads to a sitting room with wood burning stove and lockable gun cupboard. The second staircase leads to the main first floor landing and to four further bedrooms and a walk in linen store. The master bedroom has excellent fitted wardrobes and a large en suite bathroom with central bath.

Sunnyside's grounds are magnificent and have also been lovingly maintained. Extending to approximately 13 acres or thereby, they include about three acres of formal gardens with beautiful manicured lawns, a selection of mature trees and shrubs and two ornamental lochs, one of which was at one time stocked with trout; the other is used by the owners for swimming in the summer.

A paddock of around 1.5 acres offers good grazing and there is a kitchen garden. There are also purpose built kennels for 10 dogs, all with their own drainage and water stand pipes for easy cleaning.

Directions

From Glasgow travel westbound on the M8, leaving at junction 30 and crossing the Erskine Bridge. Proceed on the A82 along the shore of Loch Lomond to Tarbet. At Tarbet turn left onto the A83 and continue over the 'Rest and be Thankful' and pass through Inveraray, Lochgilphead, and into Tarbert. At Tarbert follow road signed for Campbelltown and after around two miles the entrance to Sunnyside can be found on the left hand side. Look out for black cast iron gate posts which are painted gold on the top.
