Canary Wharf was built in 1936 for a shipping company that imported fruit from the Canary Islands. The wharf was further developed in the late 1980s after the closure of the West India Docks, which were once one of the busiest ports in the world.

Some of London’s highest paid individuals live and work in Canary Wharf. The European headquarters for HSBC, Citibank and Barclays are located here, contributing to Canary Wharf’s very low proportion of ‘low paying’ jobs relative to the rest of the capital. In 2012, the area’s working population rose to over 1 million people.

The majority of housing in Canary Wharf is high end, high-rise apartment buildings inhabited by working professionals.

Canary Wharf has a local secondary school, George Green’s, which is a coeducational state school that was rated ‘Satisfactory’ in a 2009 Ofsted inspection. Further north in the Borough of Tower Hamlets are the Sir John Cass Foundation and Redcoat Church of England Secondary School, rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, and Langdon Park Community School, which received a rating of ‘Good’.

Canary Wharf’s closest independent schools are the Marathon Science School for boys, located in Surrey Quays, and Blackheath High School for girls.

Getting around

The Canary Wharf underground station is on the Jubilee line, which runs laterally through the north of the district, and is well connected to central London, The City and Stratford. The area is also served by the DLR with several stations located throughout the Isle of Dogs. These include South Quay, Crossharbour and Island Gardens. The DLR extends throughout the East and Southeast of London and provides reliable service to more than 80 million of Canary Wharf’s residents, commuters and visitors every year. Interestingly, Canary Wharf Underground Station was used as a filming location for a number of scenes in Danny Boyle’s 2002 horror film 28 Days Later.

In addition to the Tube and the DLR, there are also a number of regular bus services operating throughout the area. Some of these include the 277, N550 and 135 buses. There are also a number of services run by Docklands Buses.

Local shops

Canary Wharf has over 240 shops, bars and restaurants, all geared towards the high end tastes of the area’s professional clientele. Canary Wharf’s shopping mall includes brands ranging from Bang & Olufsen to Thomas Pink.

For fine dining, Roka Canary Wharf serves contemporary Japanese cuisine overlooking Canada Square, while the Boisdale offers a lively restaurant atmosphere serving Scottish fare accompanied by live music. The Boisdale venue also specialises in whisky and Havana cigars and includes a caviar and oyster bar among its many attractive features.

Based on New York’s Wintergardens, East Wintergarden offers excellent evening entertainment in a modern, stylish venue that offers rooms and halls for conferences, concerts, comedy gigs, corporate gatherings and a variety of other events.

Need to complete your weekly shop? Never fear, you will be well catered for in Canary Wharf. The area is home to the largest and busiest Waitrose supermarket in the United Kingdom. After being re-opened in 2011, the store attracts more than 80,000 regular customers each week. Keeping in touch with the wealthy tastes that are so prominent in the area, the store boasts an incredibly vast selection of wines – more than 2,000 different types from over 20 countries.
