The local area guide to living in Poole

Poole is a seaport in Dorset, and is the second biggest town in the county after Bournemouth. It became one of the busiest ports in England during the 18th century, thanks to a significant amount of trading with North America. The town was used as a departing point for D-Day landings during the Second World War, most notably during the Normandy Invasion.

The town now attracts a significant amount of tourists each year, offering the chance to see its awe-inspiring natural harbour, its collection of Blue Flag beaches, and its impressive Lighthouse Arts Centre. There are a range of outdoors activities to do here such as fishing, sailing, kite flying and hiking.

Poole is very popular with boat and yacht enthusiasts, and has new marinas being built in the Sandbanks area. Nature lovers will see Poole as the ideal place to live, as the beautiful countryside is never far off from sight in and around the town, while the beaches are some of the finest in the whole of the UK.

Poole has an older population than the rest of the UK with the average age being 42. This is mainly because of the increasing amount of retirees choosing to settle down in the tranquil surroundings of Dorset.

English is the predominant language spoken in Poole, with over 90.2% being fluent. Polish is the second most spoken language at 3.5%, followed by Malayalam at 1%. Christians make up 55.9% of the population, followed by no religion at 31.1%, while Muslims make up 1.4%.

Poole is quite an affluent area, with a lot of young entrepreneurs flocking to these shores to reap the benefits of the marinas and yachting. The top occupations here are professional at 18.6%, skilled trades at 11.8% and elementary at 11.8%.

Nearby schools

There are a few primary schools in Poole, most notably Talbot Primary School, Longfleet Church of England, and Heatherlands Primary School. When it comes to secondary education, the Parkstone Grammar School has an excellent return when it comes to GCSE results. St Edward's RC CE VA is another good alternative and offers pupils to stay on at sixth form, with A Levels and BTEC courses available in a wide variety of subjects.

Getting around

Poole offers numerous forms of transport to navigate through the town, as well as for venturing to other parts of the country. There are three main bus routes; Route One, Route 7 and Route 32, and they pretty much service all the main areas in town. The A35 and A354 motorways go to Exeter, the A350 goes to Salisbury, while the A31 East allows access to Southampton and London. There is a coach route that goes all the way to central London, as well as Gatwick and Heathrow airports. The railway station also goes to London, Waterloo. From May to September, there are ferries operating in Poole that go to Cherbourg, France.

Local shops

The Dolphin Shopping Centre in the heart of Poole has a big selection of fashion and retail outlets, as well as food shopping. Poole is well known for its gourmet dining, and because of its proximity to the sea, you can be sure to find excellent spots for fish and seafood. The Guildhall Tavern is a French restaurant, located on Market Street, and is designed with a fitting nautical theme. The Storm Fish Restaurant also offers fresh seafood, with the additional option of cooking courses.

Aside from shopping and dining, Poole Park is a lovely destination to take the family, where you will be able to see a multitude of aquatic birds and a miniature railway. Compton Acres is also close to the centre of town, and has a lovely Japanese water garden and tea room.
