The local area guide to living in Fleet

The picturesque town of Fleet can be found in the North-East corner of Hampshire, just a short journey from Basingstoke. As the home to miles of beautiful rolling countryside and several hamlets, as well as some beautiful surrounding parishes, it should come as no surprise that the area is so popular. And this is before we even mention the locally famous Fleet Pond!

Basingstoke canal runs through the centre of the town, making the area particularly popular for those travelling through on hikes, cycles or walks.

The town itself is charming and quaint, with the general area boasting a ripe history, as shown through its enduring buildings and monuments. These include the nearby King John's castle, and of course the historically renowned Dogmersfield Park in the village over. As a result, Fleet, nestled conveniently amidst these, and comprising several amenities of its own, has easily made its way to the top of the Halifax Survey's 'Best Place To Live in the UK' list.

Information about the local residents

The most recent 2011 census showed the population of the town of Fleet to be at a respectable 38,726. Having been voted the Halifax Survey's Best Place to Live in the UK, it's not hard to see why. The employment levels sit at a comfortable 80%, which is higher than the 71% national average. Similarly, the average weekly wage is estimated to be approximately £843 - a substantial amount higher than the national average of £616.

Naturally, with such a popular and thriving area, the house prices do tend to reflect this popularity, however for those willing and able to spend that bit extra, Fleet has something for everyone.

Nearby schools

The vast majority of the selection of infant and primary schools in the area boast excellent results, both in student and parent satisfaction, and in the most recent Ofsted reports. Both the nearby Tavistock Infant School and Elvetham Heath Primary School received 'Outstanding' Ofsted results in their reports, whilst Heatherside Infant and Junior school both achieved a 'Good' rating.

Fleet has three main schools offering secondary or higher education. The Court Moor School and Calthorpe Park School are both co-educational secondary schools, while there is also St Nicholas School, an independent day school offering education to boys aged 3-7, and girls aged 3-16.

Getting around

Fleet is situated alongside the M3, which offers useful links to London, and across the rest of the UK. There is also a regular bus service offered by Stagecoach, which provides daily services to the surrounding towns, and even to Basingstoke.

Fleet railway station has recently been refurbished to include more parking facilities, making it a lot more convenient for commuters. The station is served by the London to Basingstoke line, and offers regular transport between both. Trains to London can take 40 minutes on the high speed trains offered at peak hours, making Fleet a popular destination for commuters to and from the city.

For those who fancy an alternative method of travel, the canal has frequent river tours and boat trips offered to the nearby towns. See a different side to Fleet and the surrounding areas with one of the river tours which run most days in the summer.

Local shops

Fleet itself benefits from a bustling high street. There are chain shops, such as Marks and Spencers and Starbucks, but also plenty of unique independent stores to choose from. Fleet is also home to Hart Shopping Centre, which contains over 40 shops, from Argos to Waitrose, and everything in between. Essentially, the town is fairly self-contained - you won't need to travel far for anything. Saying this, Basingstoke is just a short journey away and contains further shopping opportunities if you want to make a day out of it.

Other things to do include sightseeing and enjoying the preserved woodland and natural reserves the town has to offer. Fleet Pond is particularly popular locally, and the park in which it can be found offers a relaxing day out for those who want to get away from the bustle of the high street.
