The local area guide to living in Isle of Mull

If you’re looking for a place to get away from it all, you’ll love the Isle of Mull. With its beautiful landscape, beaches, and quaint island amenities, you’ll enjoy the full Hebridean experience. The island has 300 miles of coastline and is the largest of the islands of Argyll. It’s also been one of the most continuously populated areas in the British Isles, having been inhabited since the last ice age. Its history has played a large part in the islands cultural heritage and unique archaeological features. From the stone circle at Lochbuie to Iron Age duns, crannogs and castles, there have been many changes here over the centuries.

Tobermory is the only major settlement on the island and is relatively modern in comparison to the rest of the island. Built in the 18th century, the town was the setting for the TV show Balamory and todays hosts the majority of residents. Other settlements here include Craignure, Fionnphort and Salen, which offer limited residential properties.

Information about the local residents

Data from the 2011 census revealed a population of 2,800, many descending from the original clans of the Macleans, MacLaines, MacKinnons, Macquarries and MacDonalds. This number has increased since the 2001 census, which revealed a population of 2,667. The demographics here can change dramatically in the summer though, with the population often doubling from the number of tourists that visit.

Tourism is now the single biggest industry when it comes to employment. Ecotourism in particular became popular in the 1990s and continues to offer job opportunities as well. Aside from these industries, farming, aquaculture and fishing also play large parts in supporting the island’s economy.

Nearby schools

The island is home to several primary schools and one all-encompassing school, Tobermory High – providing education right from primary school to secondary school years. The school performed well in its recent inspection, carried out by Education Scotland. The nursery level education, inclusive ethos of the school, and high quality support for all students were just some of the key strengths that were listed. Areas of improvement included the curriculum and the need for greater challenges for students.

Another alternative secondary school nearby is Oban High School, ideal for residents on the south west of the island. Children can stay in an Oban hostel during the week from Monday-Thursday to make this a viable option.

Getting around

Travel by car or bus is pretty easy on the island. West Coast Motors, a company that have increased the number of service routes over recent years, operate the majority of bus routes. These routes include travel from Craignure to Tobermory and on to Fionnphort. There’s also a service from Tobermory to Dervaig and Calgary. For those travelling by car, single-track roads are the norm, but passing places occur frequently, making it not too difficult to travel.

The ferry port for Mull is Oban, which is easily reachable from anywhere in Scotland. The ferry runs from the mainland to Craignure, in Mull. There’s also a train station in Oban, for those who’d prefer not to drive. Most trains are timed with the ferry schedule in mind.

Local shops

Shopping isn’t the islands strong point, but you can find all your essentials and usual amenities in Mull. Instead of mainstream shopping, the activities here cater to a more outdoors lifestyle, with walks, beaches and wildlife all abundant.

The majority of your shopping can be done in the island’s main town, Tobermory. Here, residents will find numerous gift shops aimed at tourists, as well as a number of general shops selling items that range from diving equipment to outdoor clothing. Other amenities here include a post office, bank, hair salon, and a Co-op supermarket. Aside from the shops, there are also a few restaurants, pubs and cafes – the MacDonald Arms and MacGochans being two of the most popular.
