The local area guide to living in Blackpool

On the coast of Lancashire, in north-west England, is the North's most famous seaside town and tourist hotspot - Blackpool. Since the construction of a railway that first brought the town national attention in the 1840s, generations of families have spent their holidays on its beaches, and it has a firmly rooted place in England's cultural history. It is most famous for its atmospheric Promenade, lights, and of course the Blackpool Tower.

To prevent any sort of decline, millions of pounds have been invested in Blackpool in recent years to modernise its appeal and attract new visitors, breathing a new lease of life into it. It is now back to its best; vibrant, eccentric, and classically British. The old Victorian sense of jollity pervades the town and is clear to all who visit.

Information about the local residents

Tourists have, over the years, brought waves of money to Blackpool, which has resulted in the construction of a wide variety of housing at all price ranges. However, like the rest of the North, the majority of houses are terraced or semi-detached - at better value than can be found in the South. There are also many larger detached houses scattered through the town

Most of the 150,000 people in Blackpool own their own home (whether outright or with a mortgage) and their livelihoods are often closely tied to looking after the 17 million annual visitors. A relatively large proportion of people work in customer service, leisure, or skilled trade.

The locals are overwhelmingly welcoming and friendly towards new faces, and the Blackpool culture has plenty to offer those looking to move to the area permanently.

Nearby schools

Blackpool is an attractive prospect for families. It has a good array of schools - there are eight primaries within the town that were rated either 'good' or 'satisfactory' in their last Ofsted inspection.

Arnold School, on Lytham Road, is the town's main independent school and it performs very well, with 99% of its pupils achieving 5 or more GCSEs at grades A* to C.

Within easy reach, there are plenty of schools for parents to choose from, offering a variety of different curriculums, approaches and faiths.

Getting around

As a tourist hotspot, Blackpool boasts excellent travel connections. The M55 offers a fast, efficient drive into and out of the town, and Northern Rail provides regular services. It also has an international airport.

The town's own internal public transport is good - bus services are widespread, and there's even a tramway taking passengers up and down the Fylde coast.

Local shops

There are plenty of attractions, amenities and things to do within the town of Blackpool. Culturally, the Grand Theatre and Grundy Art Gallery have plenty to offer - and the Winter Gardens and Stanley Park are well worth wandering around. The latter two both have guided heritage tours available to those who are interested.

There are many excellent cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars throughout Blackpool, with a huge amount of variety to suit any taste.

Shoppers will find Houndshill Shopping Centre more than sufficient. It sits conveniently close to the Promenade and has all the expected high street brands. Beyond the confines of the Shopping Centre, a little off the beaten track, are plenty of independent stores and boutiques, as well as trendy designer outlets.
